The Art of Fashion: Christian Lacroix

l00240m887285729_ec47abbb9914One of the more obvious and celebrated examples from this upcoming season’s couture would be Christian Lacroix’s finale an eau de nil satin wedding gown with a gilded headdress.  Lacroix is known for being influenced by history and reinventing  through bright colors, intricate patterns, and textures.  After 22 years of designing under his own label, Christian Lacroix has bid adieu.  Ending his show with a bang, this beautifully embellished wedding dress made the model look more like a devotional painting of a saint or the Virgin Mary rather than a bride.  The dress included elaborate lace sleeves, embroidered gold crosses, and colorful roses scattered on the shoulders, around the wrists and at the hem.  It is safe to assume that this French designer picked up a little inspiration from his studies of art history at University of Montpellier, the Sorbonne in Paris, and the Louvre Museum.  This piece would not be my choice for a wedding dress, but it certainly is beautiful to look at.  It reminds me of some of these Spanish and Russian church icons.  The bride is truly being adorned by this dress, as these saints are being adorned in these paintings.
