Q&A

Open Sharing Policy

Question: Can I put Helium’s photographs on my Myspace, Facebook, blog or personal website?
Answer: Yes! Helium gives you downloadable images to post wherever you like. Only two restrictions apply:

  1. It must be a Helium Original photograph taken from a Fashion Feature Shoot. The page that you download these images from will be marked as “Open Sharing Policy” images. They almost always give you “download image” accessability.
  2. The image must contain the sjHelium.com logo and cannot be cropped, modified or adjusted in any way. The only exception is resizing the image to fit your page or use.

Q: Can I print an image?
A: No and yes. The images downloadable from the site are for web use only and are low resolution. You may order prints through Helium (very high quality with perfect color management) by emailing jack@sjHelium.com. Standard portfolio prints (9×12) are $15. You may request other sizes.

Q: LAME! I hate this policy. Can I have an exception?
A: Helium’s Sharing Policy (and the purpose of the Helium logo) is to make sure that anyone who sees the image can easily find its source. Our Feature pages give credit to designers, photographers, models, makeup artists, hair stylists, sketch artists and the over 40 people that meet every week to plan our shoots, make our website and magazines. Helium Magazine owns all of the photographs that it takes, and everyone who contributes owns Helium. If you would like to request and exception to our policy, please email matt@sjHelium.com (Matthew Mountford, editor in chief) with what you would like and it will definitely be considered.

Closed Sharing Policy

Q: What is the closed sharing policy?
A: If you have found a page that says “Closed Sharing Policy,” please notify Helium immediately. We’re very interested in discovering what it is too.

Fashion Designers / Boutiques

Question: Why is Helium contacting me?
Answer: Because we think you’re awesome! The Research Board in Helium’s Fashion Department studies and researches fashion in Silicon Valley. We often select up-and-coming designers to feature on our website, in our fashion shows or in our magazine. Our goal is to organize and strengthen the network in Silicon Valley’s fashion industry to make it a more profitable (and something Silicon Valley can be proud of).

Q: What do I get if I work with Helium?
A: Helium is all about promotion and exposure. Our Fashion and Photography Departments will work together to plan and execute your photo shoot, and a writer from our Editorial Department will do an interview with you for a story. You can use our images on your website (read Open Sharing Policy) and in your portfolio, as well as put “Helium Feature” on your resume. We realize that our Mission is about money and industry, but our commitment to journalism ethics does not allow Helium to accept paid content.

Q: What can I expect to happen?
A: Once we confirm a date, our Fashion and Photography Departments will develop a concept for your photo shoot and manage all of the logistics (location, models etc.). You will work with Jasmine Duarte (Helium’s fashion director) to ensure the shoot fits within the image that you would like your line to be seen in. We do the shoot, wave our magic wand, and the feature shows up on our website.

Q: Can I request to be featured?
A: Yes you may. Email jenn@sjHelium.com and we’ll add you to our index of designers or possible move up a feature we might have been planning on approaching you about.

Q: I’m a fashion designer, but I’m not located in the San Jose area or the Silicon Valley. Can I still be featured in Helium?
A: Helium’s priority is local designers, but we are open to and encourage people from outside our community to work with us to help the Silicon Valley grow as a fashion Mecca.

Models, Hair and Makeup

Question: I’m interested in modeling for Helium.
Answer: Send an e-mail to model@sjhelium.com with your information and some head shots or link to an online portfolio.

Q: Does Helium pay their models?
A: Most assignments are not paid. Models receive exposure on the website or magazine. They also receive a digital copy of their photos with the Helium logo to be put on their website or online portfolio. Our profit (when there is any) goes to charity.

Q: Can I order prints for my physical portfolio?
A: Contact jack@sjHelium.com to order a standard 9″x12″ portfolio print. A $15 cost and handling charge applies.

Q: I’m interested in doing hair and make-up for Helium.
A: Send an e-mail to Esther at Beauty@sjhelium.com with a resume and a link to your website.

Photographers

Question: Is Helium hiring photographers, or do you accept editorial submissions?
Answer: Please email inquiries to jack@sjhelium.com. We are working on developing a community feature program that would allow photographers to plan and execute their own fashion shoots to be featured on the website. We will also be looking for photographers for editorial shoots.
